The Old Post Office

Located in the picturesque village of St Fagan’s, just 4 miles from the centre of Cardiff, The Old Post Office is a great base for visiting the capital and South Wales. Set within the old village Post Office and Police Station, the listed building holds many a story. But in no way are we caught up in the past…

The modern restaurant extension is a perfect example of how we fuse new with old. We maintain traditions of a warm welcome and a friendly stay, but in the surroundings of clean, modern lines. Even on the menu you will find a mix of traditional dishes given a new dimension with some modern European influences.

So enjoy Cardiff away from the hustle and bustle of the inner-city, and experience the simple relaxing atmosphere of this new style restaurant with rooms.

The Old Post Office is also the perfect wedding venue to hold the perfect wedding reception and/or wedding evening with a magnificent restaurant, overnight guest rooms, a marquee attached to the main building and  ample free car parking for your guests.

Latest Review somelier77, 18 April 2012

I cant believe that above review was so positive and so long! I cant believe someone has spent that amount of time for writing something which is basically not true! It must have been the owner himself who wants to improve his ratings or person connected to the Old Post Office, as the place is the biggest disaster ever!
The rooms are dirty and they stink of mould wherever you go, there is missing coffee, tea bags and filthy sugar tins. The owner himself is an arogant prick and there is only one pleasent worker who greets guests and makes up for the owner, pulling a better face and covering for him all his shit! I am not going to waste my time on more feedback just to say: DO NOT GO THERE AT ALL!!!! Stay in YHA better or sleep on the central station as it would be better experience for your romantic weekend! Regards
PS I was trying to stop myself from using "bad language" here but this place qualifies for the worst swearing.

What a piece of rubbish!!!

On entering the Old Post Office situated in the beautiful, picturesque village of St Fagans I was overwhelmed by the splendour of the building itself and also the elegance of the interior décor. On arrival we were warmly greeted by our host for the evening who was incredibly attentive and gave my partner and I an instant feel of relaxation. We were then seated in an airy room with ambient lighting and the restaurant itself was surrounded by floor to ceiling windows which allowed the lights from the romantic courtyard outside to flood into the restaurant adding an extra something to the romantic feel of the restaurant.

After showing us the wine menu and taking our drinks order, the host then brought out freshly made bread and butter served on a piece of Welsh slate. We both loved this unique way of making something so simple such as bread and butter look so special. We then went on to choose our courses, my partner opted for the Tuscan bean salad.

He described this as a deliciously tasty starter which had a rich, aromatic tomato sauce with a little kick of spice blending the sweet taste of tomatoes and the spicy seasoning beautifully. This dish had a variety of textures brought out by the combinations of beans used in the salad including butter beans and lentils, the smoothness of the sauce which was rounded off with the pungent taste of the parmesan cheese. My partner loving food with a hidden kick found this dish to be a taste sensation and was pleasantly surprised.

I chose the pickled beetroot and broccoli salad accompanied by a beetroot dressing and sweet cherry tomatoes, radish shavings and broad beans. The starter arrived looking spectacular, the colours of the beetroot and the broccoli together were vibrant and vivid and practically jumped of the plain white serving plate. On tasting the dish I was surprised by how light and refreshing the starter was, perfect for a beautiful spring evening. The pickled beetroot had a rich, earthy flavour with a hidden hint of spice from the pickling process and the broccoli was sweet and tender. This in combination with the freshness of the beetroot dressing made it a lovely starter. In addition the radish shavings added a hint of pepperiness and the cherry tomatoes were deliciously sweet. All in all a very flavoursome and satisfying first course.

My partner then chose the 16oz sirloin steak which originated from the Usk Valley which was accompanied by a potato, tomato and radish side salad. In his own words “simply the best cut of meat I have had in years”. My partner was asked by the host how he would like his steak cooked and he opted for medium-rare and oh my god didn’t they nail it! Absolutely amazing! The steak was cooked to perfection and full of flavoursome juices making it melt in the mouth. He said you could really tell this was a high quality piece of meat. The accompanied side salad had a variety of delightful flavours brining a hint of saltiness from the well-seasoned potatoes, a kick of sweetness from the tomatoes and the traditional peppery taste of the radish. This flavour combination had obviously been well thought out to compliment the meaty flavour of the steak perfectly. What an amazing triumph to locally sourced Welsh ingredients!

I chose the hand-picked crab and brown shrimp risotto. The risotto itself was deliciously rich and creamy and the flavours of the crab and brown shrimps had permeated the rice beautifully so that the whole dish tasted of the sea. The rice was cooked to al dente just the way I like it, with a bite and both the hand-picked crab and brown shrimps were incredibly fresh and sweet. The shrimps were very succulent and juicy and had a very delicate flavour. In addition to the sea food, the risotto also contained a mixture of wilted spinach and sweet chargrilled red and yellow peppers which added another texture to the main course. The risotto was incredibly moreish and once I had started eaten, I literally couldn’t stop.

My partner chose the Panna cotta served with poached rhubarb for dessert, this was a light, sweet, creamy dessert with a hint of sourness. The panna cotta had a delicious sweet and creamy taste with a hint of fresh vanilla bean which was both elegant and light. This combined with the tartness of the poached rhubarb cut the sweetness of the panna cotta. My partner not usually a big fan of rhubarb thoroughly enjoyed the dessert and felt he had been converted. He was pleasantly surprised by how poached rhubarb can transform a dessert and make it extra special, he will definitely be eating poached rhubarb again!

For dessert I chose a rather boozy dessert of Baileys frozen cream, this came served in a martini glass with coco powder dusted over the top and looked delicious. The texture of the frozen cream was similar to that of ice cream, however was softer, creamier and richer than a normal ice cream. It literally melted on the tongue. The Baileys combined with the frozen cream meant the dessert was not too sweet and the flavour of the well-known Irish liquor was not over powering. A lovely way to end the meal.

What a perfect way to spend an evening with my partner!
