In and amongst the hustle and bustle of Cardiff City Centre, the Thai House offers an oasis of calm to all those who visit this peaceful sanctuary. Me and my wife decided to review the Thai House one sunny weekday afternoon and were immediately struck by how a restaurant situated in the centre of a busy Capital City can give such a relaxing environment that completely surrounds you.
On entering we were warmly greeted by our waiter for the afternoon and were seated next to the window which overlooked the pretty window boxes outside, offering a sense of spring tranquillity. We were then presented with the menu which hosts a myriad of culinary delights, however having never really eating a great deal of Thai food we both welcomed the polite waiters suggestions and recommendations.
My wife who is a huge lover of prawns chose the butterfly king prawns which were deep fried in a tempura batter and served with a sweet chilli sauce. The prawns themselves were delicious! They were perfectly pink and had been cooked till succulent, tender and juicy. The tempura batter on the outside of the prawns was golden, light and crunchy which added a great texture in comparison to the meaty, soft prawns. The sweet chilli dipping sauce was very well balanced, with the combination of sharp, sour, sweet and salty flavours hitting every region of my mouth, what a taste sensation. The gentle kick of chilli in the sauce also cut through richness of the prawns.
I opted for the Tord Mun which is chicken rissoles made with herbs and a slight hint of curry, this came accompanied by a peanut and chilli dipping sauce. The chicken rissoles had a lovely crisp outer coating from where they had been fried and inside they were really juicy and moist. The flavours of the herbs and the slight hint of curry also came through but was not overpowering and complemented the flavour of the chicken. The peanut and chilli dipping sauce was chunky in texture and you could see small pieces of peanut in the sauce which was lovely. The rich savoury taste of the peanuts enhanced the remaining flavours of the dish really well and it was incredibly moreish.
For the main course my wife chose the Leeky beef which is stir fried beef with leeks in oyster sauce served with fragrant Thai rice, a lunchtime favourite at the Thai House and my wife could definitely see why! The strips of beef were very tender and melted in the mouth, whilst having a caramelised outside and the strips of leek added a slight sweetness to the main course. The Oyster sauce, a staple in Thai cuisine greatly enhanced the flavours of both the beef and leeks and also a rich, earthy undertone to the dish.
I went for the Classic Thai Green Curry, a popular lunchtime dish amongst the Thai people. However as stated on the menu this dish does have a twist and on tasting it I could definitely taste the twist. The curry was incredibly fragrant and aromatic in comparison to other Thai green curries I have tasted and the flavour of the thai basil used in the dish really came through. The curry sauce had a beautiful pistachio green colour and had a warming chilli kick. The chicken pieces were also lovely and tender and had really absorbed the herbs and spices in the curry. The curry was accompanied by special rice noodles which were the best noodles I had ever tasted. All in all a lovely varied main course with an assortment or flavours and textures that would “wow” anybody.
My wife went for the Banana dream for dessert which did not disappoint her sweet tooth. This dessert comprised of little banana fritters served with a delicious homemade banana ice cream. The banana fritters were crunchy and golden on the outside and had a beautiful caramelised toffee flavour from the caramel sauce. Inside the banana fritters were soft and creamy. The homemade ice cream was rich, smooth and creamy and you could really taste the banana flavour. What a lovely lunch time dessert.
I went for the Pumpkin and Coconut pudding which I was told was a classic warm Thai dessert. Having never eaten pumpkin before I was pleasantly surprised by the pudding as it was full of flavour and really creamy. It was not stodgy at all but was really light and refreshing. This accompanied by the flavour of creamed coconut made for the perfect taste and texture combination. In addition it was served with pieces of kiwi fruit which added another layer of fresh flavour to the dish.
The Thai house is a great little restaurant to enjoy a spot of lunch with work colleagues or a three course dinner with family that will leave you satisfied, relaxed and rejuvenated. I can honestly say me and my wife cannot wait to return to the Thai House!
