Since hearing of Jamie's Italian opening in Cardiff I was eager to visit. My partner and I went along to an evening meal at the restaurant, located on the outside of the St David's 2 shopping centre. First impressions were good; as soon as we set foot inside we were greeted not only by exceptionally friendly staff but also mouthwatering aromas coming from the semi-open kitchen.
In the centre of the dining area is a cold food preparation bar, adorned with hanging salami, chillis and garlic. Above this was a caged area decorated with wine and vintage food tins. There is a very urban yet rustic feel, with large brass hanging lamps and metal chairs contrasting with the dimly lit atmosphere and wooden tables.
After being shown to our seats by a very attentive waiter, our drink orders were taken. A selection of Italian wines and beers are on offer, along with the usual choice of soft drinks. I usually find myself deciding on food relatively quickly whilst eating out, but whilst browsing the menu at Jamie's I found myself indecisive. The problem being that everything just sounded so good!
To start I opted for the Caprese Salad, which consisted of baby mozzarella, basil, tomatoes and olive oil, a traditional Italian starter made with the freshest ingredients. Beautifully soft and springy boccancini, the gorgeous mild taste played off perfectly against the variety of different textures of the tomatoes. A wonderfully light starter that pleased the palate but left enough room for the main course to come.
My partner decided on the Sweet Roasted Peppers which were dressed with garlic and basil and served with a gridled chickpea flatbread. It arrived presented beautifully on a wooden board, the sweet and sticky peppers layered between three slices of chickpea flatbread. Flavours were gorgeous and all well-cooked. Seemingly simple yet executed perfectly.
For my main course I went for 'Jamie's Favourite' Turkey Milanese. A large slice of turkey stuffed with fontina and prosciutto, topped with soft fried free range egg and truffles. The flavours and textures were excellent, the outside was lovely and crunchy with the gooey fontina cheese sandwiched in the centre. The truffles gave a wonderful depth of flavour to the turkey, and the perfectly cooked, runny egg on top was certainly saved for last! Accompanying this I chose their Famous Polenta Chips, crispy fried boulders of potato, with rosemary salt and Parmesan. Nice and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and beautifully seasoned.
My partner chose the Flash Grilled Feather Steak for her main. British beef pounded with sage and prosciutto, served with a spicy tomato salsa. My partner is a big steak lover and definitely recommends this for any likeminded person who comes to Jamie's. After trying some of her steak I'd have to agree; it was easily one the most flavoursome pieces of meat I've ever eaten, well seasoned, well cooked, and well rested. Although a simple dish, a perfectly cooked steak clearly shows the skill of the chef. With a side order of fresh garlic and parsley Funky Chips, this is a traditional steak and chips with a modern twist.
To finish the night I had to go for the Panna Cotta; a rich, creamy desert arriving served in the centre of a terracotta bowl surrounded by a compote of peach and mojito. The light, silky smooth 'cooked cream' paired well with the sweet peach compote, and the slight hint of mojito added another flavour to the mix.
My partner decided on the Amalfi Lemon Kurd Slice, served with roasted pistachios and crushed berries. The slice was delicious, the acidity of the lemon cutting through the winter berries without being too sharp. Even after two courses, this was certainly a desert that left your taste buds wanting more!
Overall, our experience at Jamie's was very positive. From the friendly, helpful staff to the decor inside to the food itself. There was nothing we could complain about. It's worth mentioning at this point that the prices are nothing out of the ordinary, with starters ranging from £3.50, the steak my partner had being just over £13 and all deserts set at £4.95. For this very typical restaurant price you are getting a whole lot more for your money, a superb meal, excellent service, and a good night out. From both me and my partner, Jamie's Italian in Cardiff gets a definite two thumbs up!
