Pipi's Cafe

Pipi’s is the only Greek café in the city centre of Cardiff, a great location for shoppers and workers alike. Patisseries of this standard and quality are hard to find in the UK and yet are common throughout the rest of Europe, bringing a taste of Greece to Cardiff.

The name Pipi’s originates from Greece, where many people are named after the Saint, Spiro. Consequently, Spiro has become such a common name amongst the Grecians that many people now have to have nicknames such as Pipi.

Pipi’s is Modern, bright and very welcoming. It has an all - weather outside seating area, great for those balmy summer days or if you just fancy nosing at passers - by. Pipi’s serves a variety of hot and cold beverages along with a great selection of sweet and savoury pastries, Panini’s and sandwiches local to the Greek cuisine. It also has a small deli section, where you can bring a taste of Pip’s home with you.

Pipi`s is a calm oasis in the middle of Cardiff town centre, an authentic Greek family run café patisserie offering exciting flavours, fresh salads, pastries and fresh deserts all with a Greek influence. The Patisserie has a very warm and welcoming feeling and a real sense of comfort and home, on arrival we were greeted by the owner and his father who was very attentive and welcoming, also full of humour and are up for a good chin wag. Which also adds to the relaxed environment, the décor of the Patisserie I thought was very modern and had a lot of black and white photography which I love so I really enjoyed having a wonder round looking at the different photographs, I must reiterate my point that sitting in this Patisserie really made me relax and enjoy every minute and took me away from the hustle and bustle of an up and coming town centre.

Me and my business partner decided to try two dishes and also sample some of Pipi`s famous coffee, we started off by sampling the calzone. This is a rolled up pizza with a sweet pepper and ham filling complimented with a cheese and onion, encased in pizza dough. The pizza dough was very sweet and gooey, holding all the ingredients mentioned above. Which when bitten into gave an explosion of fresh flavours and different textures such as gooey, crunchy and smooth, this interpretation of a simple pizza done to such an high standard is a real snack treat and a must try.

We also decided to try the spinach and feta slice, this is a spinach and feta combination with a filo pastry topping. This was a real treat with a high intensity of flavour being brought in by feta accompanied with subtle essences of spinach flavour, the textures of this dish were very well put together giving a light crunch brought through from the filo pastry with its traditional flakie texture combined with the smooth feta and spinach texture combination was a real testament and thought that went into such a simple combination done to a high standard, this is truly a lovely light café snack that would tickle any taste bud!.

As I said the owner wanted us to sample some of his coffee that he had to offer, my business partner who is an avid coffee lover went for his favourite type of coffee which is an espresso. He thought this was one of the best cup of espresso he had ever tried, being that it had been specially blended for Pipi`s it had a really smooth taste but still with a slight bite that you would traditionally find with espresso.
I myself being a man who doesn’t drink coffee was slightly reluctant to try some, but I was asked by the owner if I would like one, and my reply was I don’t really drink coffee I can’t stand the taste, he then asked me if I had a sweet tooth? I said yes and no. He then said wait there and returned with a vanilla latte, and praise the lord I am converted what an amazingly tasting coffee!. Which I am going to have to order every time I have a cup of coffee in the future, I think this gives you a good idea of the service you can expect from the staff and also the attention to detail they put into the venue, staff and off course the most important the customers .
